Well, Ckrisz, you beat me to it, but since I have already written it, I might as well post it.

I watched that show for a few minutes, and promptly changed channel before it started to drive me insane.

I do not think the show was based on anything, but it did have characters from a popular classic Chinese novel. Some translated the title of the book "Legend of the Monkey God", however the book title should be more like "Record of the Journey to the Western Territory". The story is about a Tang Dynasty Buddhist monk's journey to India to acquire Buddhist scripture for the Chinese people. Recgonizing his piousness, the Gods sent four former Gods who had commited crimes to be his bodyguards (as a way to redeem themselves so they can regain their status as Gods.) The Monkey God had the most capabilities, the Pig-faced God was a lesser warrior while the Black-faced God was least capable. The last bodyguard was a dragon disguised as a horse.

The story is obviously a fable, but the monk was an actual historical figure, and he did make the trip to India and back with precious Buddhist scriptures.

It's a horribly written, poorly researched and produced, badly performed show, not even good for kingdergarten kids. The understanding and portrayal of the Chinese culture is very distorted and shallow and simply laughable, not to mention that it is filled with steretypes and cultural insensitivities.

Worse of all, it is trying to integrate the "western individualism " and all the other political propaganda into the show in such an awkward way that the intention of the show is more about "western ideas" and "anti red China" than any real adventure.

It really reached the lowest level for this type of shows. It is so pathetic that I don't even feel angry about it anymore. You've seen CTHD and now you see this, ha ha ha...

as soon as i saw Greg from Dharma and Greg was in it, i knew it would suck. why can't you tell a tale from another culture without having to put a white man in it everytime?
