In the LA Times business section 3/6, the report for box-office receipts has been raised again for Wo hu zang long to $105 million. Will they increase the projections again after the film picks up some Oscars?

how much will CTHD make??

the last time i checked CTHD was at $88.6 million at the box office. it should pass $90 million within these couple of days. it's safe to say by the time of oscars it would be $100 million or really close to it. if it can win a few oscars then a few million more in ticket sales is no problem.
at around December when the movie just came out [in limited release] it relied on word of mouth & good critical reviews. die hard movie enthusiasts were waiting desperately to see it & they spread the word to the 'ordinary' folks. the 2nd wave was after the 10 oscar nominations! now more people want to check it out because it's the academy who is saying it's good [even nominated for BEST PICTURE]. if it wins alot of oscars then there will be an extra 3rd wave [especially if it wins BEST PICTURE or BEST DIRECTOR]. so i guess the $105 million prediction would be pretty accurate. i think i read in EW magazine, they predicted both CTHD & Traffic would hit the $110-$120 million mark & Chocolat will reach $70 million. CTHD is 89.2M as of Tuesday.
It will pass 90 millions before coming weekend. This weekend will add another 4 millions. (94M) It is safe to say the it will generate another 5-6 millions between March 12 to March 22. (making it 99-100 millions) That leaves two weekend days for CTHD to make sure it pass the 100M mark before Oscar start. 105 millions looks conservative to me even if CTHD did not win big at Oscar. |

200m$ easily. Approx. 14 million (100m$/7$) viewers up to now. In USA there are still about 610m people who haven't seen it. I propose Sony Classic to release it again but in a dubbed version so that everyone can understand it.

NOOOOOOOOOO, PLEASE DON'T DUB!!!
The beauty and elegance of the movie evolved not only from the action or the words...these elements brought merely a body to the movie. The HEART and SOUL came from each of the actors voices. Their voice inflections..the pauses between the dialogues...the tone in their delivery...the sounds that they made, as each one of them conveyed their inner most emotions. CTHD will not be the same with other peoples voices... It is an art work..perfect! To dub it, is to take a Picasso, or a Matisse, and re- arranged it so people can understand it better. Sometimes, humanity are better off not understanding everything...in order for them to appreciate the true wisdom and power that an art brings. |

I won't contact my colleagues at Sony Classics.
How about making a Hollywood version of it like they did with the Seven Sumarai and all the other big foreign hits? I ask Lee if can direct that one too. |

why make a hollywood version?

Sony classic:
Why the need to make a hollywood version at all? I think it is about time for Americans to realized that there are tremendous amounts of incredible, entertaining, provocative films out there. It's about time America become less self involved, and for once allow themselves to learn from the other great directors and writers from all over the world. If Sony is really smart..they will use Zhang Ziyi's popularity to advertise "THE ROAD HOME"...director by Zhang Yimou...here in the united states. We already know for a fact that women will go and watch it because it's a love story...men will watch it because of Ziyi. Sony can do a media blitz with her..the talk shows (Letterman, Leno etc.) she can go with a translator. Trust me..she doesn't even have to say much..she can giggle her way through the interview and i promise you, men are going to watch the movie...well, right after they pick themselves up from the floor and put their tongue back in there mouth Does Sony really believe that the reason why men of all ages, from various socioeconomic backgrounds, went back to see CTHD 10 times or more because of the love story? Yeaaaaa Right!!! They keep going back for one reason and one reason only because of ZHANG ZIYI !!! And if Sony doesn't believe..then show them this website. |

Thats wat i gotta say to all them people who didnt want to watch it cause of the subtitles. "A road diverges into two roads.Blah Blah Blah Blah. I feel sad for those who are mentally handicapped and can't read fast or unable to read. How about showing a dubbed version on one show during the day? I will propose this to Sony Pictures Classics if you all agree.

there are marketing reason to dub the movie. i don't encourage dub, but at least Sony give the american the oppotunities to view the original version. it is understandable to dub the movie for second release
CTHD really going to pass 100M. amazing! - zini |

I understand your point of view in regards to allowing the handicapped population have a chance to enjoy the movie. In that respect, then a dub version is acceptable.
My suggestion is that you allow Chow Yun Fat, Michelle Yeo and even the actress that played Jade Fox to do their own characters (given that they all speak English). This will allow a continuity to the characters. The biggest hurdle that you are going to face is trying to find an actress to dub Ziyi's character. BE VERY CAREFUL with this one...she has a very strong following here in the US and all over the English speaking countries...(almost CULT LIKE FOLLOWING) If you make a wrong move, Sony will end up with another "PRINCESS MONONOKE"...I THINK MIRAMAX ARE STILL KICKING THEIR OWN ASS WITH THAT ONE! |

I've seen the movie dubbed in english on dvd. and it's pretty entertaining because none of the voices sound like the actor so you're laughing through most of the show

i won't be interested in seeing the dubbed english version because it will be so corny. "GIVE ME BACK MY COMB"~Jen

Dubbing does take away the authenticity of sometimes, the intent of the scene.
Hmmmm .. but then again - so does reading the English subtitles! Ahhhh ... the only true way to get the full effect of the movie is to then, understand Mandarin. Geee!!, now I wish I were able to understand. -GDS p.s. From an Asian American perspective, ... if I had to choose one or the other - I would definitely go with the English subtitles! Ban all dubbing for life!! |

I actually went to see it for the fourth time on Saturday since I know it's going to pass $100 mil this weekend and want to be part of the history.
$65 mil in the other countries now, so I say we are looking at a $200 mil worldwide gross. Incredible. |
